Nation's Leftovers Request Formal Role in Tomorrow's Dinner
Stop cooking meals. Start cooking chains, where every dinner is deliberately the raw material for the next one.
By R. Dunmore The Kitchen Desk 2026-07-01
A household treats meals as discrete events and leftovers as a failure state. This is backwards. Cook a chain instead: design each meal so its remainder is the intended input to the next.
The chain
roast chicken → stock + rice bowl → soup → fried rice → hand pies
Each step is a real meal on its own night. Each one also produces, on purpose, the starting ingredient for the night after.
Rules
- Every meal should create an intentional next ingredient.
- Leftovers are designed, not tolerated.
- Recipes support substitution based on what already exists.
- The goal is less waste and, more importantly, less nightly decision-making.
