Under Your Sink Sits a Maintenance Event Nobody Disclosed at Purchase
It is not a hygiene failure. It is a five-to-ten-year putty replacement that shipped with the sink and was never written down.

There is a dark ring where the sink drain meets the basin. You have scrubbed it. It came back. You concluded you are a bad housekeeper. You are not. The fixture was assembled around a maintenance event that nobody disclosed at purchase.
The problem
Most drop-in sink drains are bedded in plumber’s putty — a soft, oil-based sealant. Putty does its job for a while and then dries, shrinks, and loses its grip, usually in five to ten years. The hairline gap that opens between the flange and the basin holds a permanent film of water, soap, and the bacteria that like both. No surface cleaner reaches it, because the dirt is under the flange, not on it.
Why the current norm is stupid
The black ring is sold to you as your fault and then solved with a product — another spray, another paste — when the actual failure is mechanical and on a timer. You cannot out-scrub a degraded seal. The fixture needs re-bedding, not re-cleaning, and that fact appears in exactly none of the marketing.
What should exist
- One-piece integrated drains. Some composite and quartz sinks mould the drain into the basin. No seam, no putty, no ring. This should be the default, not a premium line.
- A gasket-and-o-ring assembly instead of putty, so the seal is a replaceable part with a known service life rather than a smear of clay that fails silently.
The fix that actually works
Treat it as the scheduled event it is. Every five to ten years, pull the drain flange, clean both faces, and re-bed it (fresh putty, or a silicone gasket). That is the whole repair. For the mineral scale that also collects there, a 10–20% citric-acid solution dissolves it without abrasives; never use a scouring pad on a finished basin, which scratches the surface and gives the next ring somewhere to grip.
A note from The Method
The internet will tell you to pour vinegar and baking soda down the drain. Do not bother. An acid (vinegar) and a base (baking soda) neutralise each other; what fizzes off is carbon dioxide, and what is left is weak salt water — less effective than either ingredient used alone. If you want the acid to dissolve scale, use the acid. If you want the base to cut grease, use the base. Combining them for cleaning is theatre.
